How to Stand Up Paddle Board in San Diego

If you’re looking to Stand Up Paddle Board (SUPing) while vacationing at L’Auberge Del Mar this summer, then we’ve got a few insider tips just for you! And if you are new to the sport, no worries. Fulcrum SurfSchool, located just a couple of blocks down Camino Del Mar, offers professional lessons for those who are not quite SUP savvy. With a few easy steps on How-To SUP, you can enjoy this exhilarating yet relaxing experience, and will be paddling with the dolphins in no time; and it’s all just steps away from your guest room!

Dan Mori, owner and head instructor at Fulcrum SurfSchool recently gave us a crash course in SUPing so that we can share the basics with you! Here’s what we learned…“I always tells my students that the first step when you go Stand Up Paddling is to assess the water conditions. Watch the ocean and time the sets of waves, see if you are at a level where you can make it out past the break on your own,” says Mori. Also, don’t let a fear of cold water discourage you; we found that our wetsuits kept us nice and toasty warm! Whether you decide to take a lesson or just rent the gear, most paddle boards are equipped with a built-in handle so carrying your board down to the beach is a breeze.

Here, some L’Auberge associates are practicing their stances and paddling techniques on the sand before they hit the ocean. Not a bad idea.

Ready to paddle out? Walk your board into the water until you are waist deep. If a wave comes along, lean into the wave as it moves past you. If a large wave comes at you, dive down into the wave so that it goes completely over you, but keep your knees close to your body so that the leash of your board doesn’t become taught and pull you backwards.

Once you’ve made it past the initial waves, the next step is to hop on your board in a kneeling position and venture farther out using your paddle. Stand up paddles have an angle or elbow in the shaft - you want this to angle forward out in front of you, just like your own arm and elbow.

Now it’s time to stand up! Once you are out far enough, lay your paddle across the board horizontally; keep your head up and bottom down. Try to look straight ahead towards the horizon. Begin to stand with your feet wide apart, each foot only about an inch from the water’s edge of the board. As you find balance, tighten your core muscles and try standing up straighter, but keep knees slightly bent. Now paddle.

Congratulations, you’re Stand Up Paddling!!! Relax and take in the view. The coast in Del Mar is lined with beautiful homes and sea life, so enjoy the scenery.

If you are interested in having a private or small group lesson with a professional instructor, just ask the Concierge about Fulcrum SurfSchool and their expert team will take care of the rest.
