Grown in the shadow of the Volcano Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, the luxury brand Moët Hennessy partnered with the Gallardo family to produce a carefully crafted product that is breaking down barriers in the world of tequila!
Upon following the desire to add tequila to their already established collections of Glenmorangie Scotch, Belvedere Vodka, Hennessy and more, Moët Hennessy decided to start from the ground up and create their new product as opposed to purchasing an already recognized brand. This gave them the freedom to apply the expertise of Maestra de Tequila, Ana Maria Romero Mena, to discover a process that changes the way you will see tequila!
Commonly, tequila is produced using only highland agave but with the expertise of Ms. Romero Mena, Volcán decided to combine 75% lowland blue agave with highland agave to bring out tastes and aromas of the terroir the agave is grown in for their Blanco.100% blue agave that is sweetened by the sun and allowed to ripen for 9 years before harvest, is slowly roasted, then crushed on a stone wheel. After that, the tequila is distilled, first in copper stills then in stainless steel and allowed to rest for 30 days. The Cristalino, which consists entirely of lowland agave, follows the same process. The key difference is the tequila is moved to age in barrels formerly used to age Glenmorangie Scotch and Hennessy Cognac, instilling no color, but leaving a drastic impact on the taste and texture.
Not only did Moët Hennessy release a standard Volcán Blanco tequila, which boasts tastes of herb, citrus, and spice with some delicate fruit notes of cherry and peach, but they have also debuted Volcán Cristalino. This newest breed of tequila consists of a blend of añejo and extra añejo tequila, which is then filtered to strip it of its color, producing a clear añejo tequila with deeper flavors of vanilla, caramel, and subtle chocolate.
